Education

http://www.usatoday.com/news/washington/2009-03-10-obamaeducation_N.htm

Obama calls on more education, better teachers, and longer school years to help our economic crisis in the future. It is quite the connection but he definitely has a point. Its interesting to me though that pretty much everything in the news these days is tied to the economic situation our country is currently facing. It just goes to show how everything can always come back to economics.

Have any of you noticed this same trend?...that stories, whether or not they are directly related to economics, somehow are connected? I'd be interested to read some examples. Why is the media focusing so heavily on this....because it is affecting everyone? because they think the reading audience can really identify? or because there isn't anything else to talk about?

  1. I have noticed this trend in more than just news outlets. If you watch TV these days, everything is talking about the economy and the recession. There are "recession chic" fashion sections on morning talk shows, advertisements for lay-away is coming back, and everything about the lasting battery for a new computer. I mean when was the last time you saw a billboard advertising for a job (thank you, Sands Casino)? I think it has a lot to do with that this problem is hitting everyone. I think a lot of people thought it would pass quickly, or not personally effect them, but it really is hitting all people. I mean one of the stars of Bravo's "Real Housewives of NYC" just lost her job as a visual artist for Victoria Secret -- and maybe even worse, that made the news.

  2. The economy is the center of America's attention right now. It's impossible to avoid. You walk into DSW or Macy's and see a 20% off sale and wonder what big holiday just passed. Is it Black Friday? Is this a sale of all the stuff they couldn't sell for Christmas? No. EVERY STORE is marking down its prices because of the economy. Everyone is TALKING about the economy. I can't get through one day without someone mentioning how many points the stock market went down today, or how much money they will save by not getting lettuce on their sandwich. Is money all America cares about? I thought that "if it bleeds, it leads." Apparently, if it's about green, it also leads.
